Why this role exists
We take on other people's infrastructure and promise a 15-minute P1 response, 24x7. That only works if the platforms are genuinely well built and the alerting is genuinely good, because a small team cannot absorb noise.
So this is not a ticket-queue role. It is a build role where the thing you build is something you then have to live with at 3am, which is a strong incentive to build it properly.
On-call, honestly
There is a rotation and it is real. What we do about it: compensating time off after any disturbed night, a hard rule that repeat alerts get fixed rather than tolerated, and a standing expectation that every incident produces either a fix or a runbook improvement.
If the same alert fires twice in a month without a fix landing, that is treated as a failure of ours, not yours.
What you will find
Client estates in every condition, including several that have never had an owner. Backup jobs failing silently for months. Autoscaling configured and never tested. A database nobody wants to touch.
If diagnosing that is satisfying rather than depressing, you will enjoy this.
Process
Application review within a week. A paid take-home based on a real remediation scenario. Then two conversations: one technical, one about how you work. No system design theatre.
What you will do
- Build and operate client platforms defined entirely in Terraform
- Take on existing estates, assess them honestly, and remediate by risk
- Own alerting that fires on user-visible symptoms, with a runbook per alert
- Participate in a 24x7 rotation with genuine compensating time off
- Run quarterly disaster recovery tests and write up what actually happened
- Automate the repetitive parts of this job rather than staffing them
What we are looking for
- Three or more years running production infrastructure on AWS, Azure or GCP
- Terraform in anger, including importing estates you did not build
- Containers and at least one orchestrator, plus an opinion on when not to use it
- Debugging a production incident with incomplete information
- Clear written communication — post-mortems and client reports are part of the job
- Comfortable saying an estate cannot meet a proposed SLA
